Dixie:-
According to the Oxford English Lexicon, the genesis of this epithet remains
incomprehensible.
According to A Dictionary of Americanisms on Historical Principles three
theories most usually effort to give explanation the term:
"Dixie" derives one way or another from Jeremiah Dixon of the
Mason-Dixon Line defining the boundary between Maryland and Pennsylvania (the
northern boundary of Dixie).

The Mason-Dixon theory is the most accepted known, but few lexicographers give
it much weight.
This piece of music from the 1900s depicts four men in blackface singing the
song. "I Wish I Was in Dixie" is an admired song about the South. It was
printed by creator Daniel Emmett, a Northerner, and in print in 1859.
A blackface minstrel-show company made the song public that same year in New
York City. With other minstrel show numbers, the song tells about the issues of
slavery. It was performed in overstated Black English Vernacular.
The song proved tremendously fashionable
and became extensively known just as "Dixie".
The song was also been printed as "Dixie's Land".
The Confederate States of America adopted the song as its
unsanctioned anthem during the American Civil War.
This and the tune's minstrel-show origins have created a strong
relationship of "Dixie" with the Old South.
As a consequence, some today analyze the song as unpleasant and
chauvinistic.
